Q&A with Hutchinson’s Rachel Tomac – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by The Alley

VYPE recently conducted an interview with Hutchinson volleyball player Rachel Tomac to learn more about her life.

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?

This year I want to take a bigger leadership role on the team. I would like to become a stronger back-row player and lead my team in kills and aces. With losing so many key players I want to help the girls feel comfortable stepping into new positions so that we can have a successful season.

VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?

It was a lot of fun getting third at the state tournament. We were competing at a high level of volleyball and it was fun because our team was able to compete and beat some really good teams. It is a lot of fun playing with a lot of talent on your team.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?

It is hard to choose a favorite teacher but during my sophomore year both my English and Math teachers were amazing. Mrs. Carithers and Mrs. Engweiler made the class enjoyable even when I didn’t understand what we were learning. They both still talk to me in the hallways and it makes my day to see them.

VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?

My favorite athletic memory is from my sophomore year when we went to the State Championship for the first time. It might’ve not been the outcome we hoped for but all the memories we made as a team were unforgettable. None of us had ever got to experience the tournament so getting to do that together made it even more memorable and brought us all even closer together.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

The teammate who has left the biggest impression on me is Maliyah Johnson. She is a year older than me and I have been playing volleyball with her since I was in 2nd Grade. She is a great leader and I have always looked up to her and all the amazing qualities she possesses. She was super helpful during my freshman year of high school and helped me gain confidence in the game. You know she cared about you because of how happy and proud she was when you accomplished something even if it was small she still cheered me on.

VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?

I love my team because everyone is super versatile and all have great qualities you look for in a teammate. I love how well we all get along and work together and enjoy all the memories we make together. They make it enjoyable even during tough practices and losses.

VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?

If I could go on vacation with anyone it would be with my family, best friends, and our very close family friends. I would pick to travel to Greece or to the beach.

VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?

I would most likely go on a shopping spree or go do something fun with my friends.

VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?

I participated in the Special Olympics for 2 years now during our annual Salt Hawk Service Day where we get to assist the athletes through their events which is an awesome event. I also participate in the blood drive we have at our school.

VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?

Some groups that I’m a part of on campus include Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Council, Volleyball, Basketball, Heartland Credit Union Internship, Junior Leaders, Senior Leaders, Briny Birds, and The SAFETY Club. I like to be involved throughout the school because it helps me meet more people and build relationships.

VYPE: Are you involved in academic excellence activities such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, or other academic clubs?

I have always been involved in Student Council and this year I am the Student Body Election Commissioner and help run our meetings.
