VYPE interviewed Hutchinson football player Mason Jones to talk about his goals for the year.
VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?
My goals for this years are at least 13 sacks, to take the Hutchinson High sack record, and to win the State Championships. I want to earn a scholarship to a school that best fits my future after football, which is either physical therapy or architectural design.
VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?
The most fun I’ve had in the past year was having my son watch me practice and play football. Big able to carry on the football tradition in the family is important. My dad, Luke Jones Jr played at K-State, my older brother, Adam Jones played at Fort Hays State and was an assistant coach at TMP in Hays. My Cousin, Orlando Drew Jones played at SMU and the Citadel.
VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?
One of my favorite teacher/coaches would be Jory Konrade. He taught art at Prairie Hills Middle School and was the Head Coach of the Jr Hight football team, where we were undefeated my 7th and 8th grade seasons. He was a great mentor and a huge influence in my life. Unfortunately, he passed away in a car accident on Nov 22nd 2019, not long after we captured a league championship. His motto that I still live by today was “When something bad happens, make something good happen.”
My other favorite teacher is Mr. Brown, he is a kind, caring, and loving person toward everyone. There is not a day goes by that when I walk past him, he stops to check up on me and have a small conversation.
VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?
My favorite sports memory last year was the scoop and score I had in the playoff game against Bishop Carroll, which was the go ahead touchdown to win the game.
VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?
Jax Henna has left the biggest impression on me because he is an undersized safety with the biggest heart for the game. Jax is a great team leader and motivated and never takes no for an answer. I feel like Jax has the heart and goals for the game that I do.
VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?
My favorite part about being on this team is that no one plays for themselves, we play as a team, and win as a team. We know what it takes to be successful, and we instill that into the underclassmen as well.
VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?
For summer vacation I would go to Miami and go to the beach with my brother, Myles.
VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?
If I was given $500 I would donate it to a non-profit organization that is very important to my mom, Harvey County Circle of Hope and put some money in my college fund.
VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?
For community service I have helped with the Soup Kitchen in the past. Currently, however, my focus is on taking care of my son, school, football and work.
