VYPE interviewed Haven football coach Drew Thalmann to learn what we should expect from this years team.
VYPE: What are the goals of the team this season?
Continue to improve and build a sustainable program. We’re doing that better now through a strong youth program. Our JV had a really good season last year too, and those guys will be big contributors to our team on Friday nites this year.
VYPE: What was the team’s best moment from last season?
Probably a goal line stand late in the game at Douglass. We didn’t finish the game well, but held on to win.
VYPE: Who is the team’s dynamic duo, and why?
Probably QB Nash Wray and RB Van Loop. They may be the smallest backfield in the state though. Nash will be replacing 2 year starter and team leader Brant Sipe which will be tough. Van was second team all district last year.
VYPE: What is the team’s favorite memory together?
We have a preseason pool party and then have a lake cookout mid way through. It’s good to cut away from football and just be “guys” sometimes. We don’t want to burn them out, but enjoy each other as well as playing football.
VYPE: What has been the biggest impression the team has made on you (the coach), and why?
I think having my own kids who are now old enough to play sports. I want to treat other people’s kids (my players) how I want my kids treated. It doesn’t mean I won’t get on them, but it means that I like them when I do. Hopefully they all know that I and the rest of the coaches care about them as people as much or more than players.
VYPE: What is your favorite part of working with this team?
They are all friends away from football. They may not be in the same close circle, but they will all battle for one another.
VYPE: Does the team participate in any community service projects?
We’ve helped several older members of the community move or little odds and ends like that. Any time I ask for volunteers, I have more than I need. They are all great kids who care about others. We also started going over to the grade school on Fridays for breakfast with the little guys. Some day I hope they realize the impact they have on the younger kids.
VYPE: Are you any players involved in academic excellence activities such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, or other academic clubs?
We have several in FFA and StuCo.
