As a senior setter for Hutchinson Central Christian, Avery Kauffman embraces the responsibility that comes with helping lead her volleyball team.
“My coach inspires me the most. She has high expectations and counts on me to lead the team,” Kauffman said.
Kauffman is the team’s setter, a position that requires quick decision-making, communication and a consistent presence during every point. She prefers the challenge of taking control at the service line, too.
“I prefer to Jump serve. It’s more effective in general,” Kauffman said.
While volleyball has brought competition and demanding environments, Kauffman values the relationships built through the sport even more. She said the closeness among teammates has made her senior season especially meaningful.
“I enjoy being friends with everyone on my team. We all get along and have so many memories together,” Kauffman said.
That bond shows up in the team’s ability to encourage one another, whether celebrating a win or responding to a difficult loss.
“I love making life long friendships. We encourage eachother and we get along very well,” Kauffman said.
One teammate who brings plenty of energy to the court is Avery Duft. Kauffman said Duft provides both vocal leadership and humor for the group.
“Avery Duft is the most vocal teammate and keeps all of us laughing,” Kauffman said.
Duft also stands out for her defensive effort.
“Avery Duft will always put herself on the floor for a save or a dig,” Kauffman said.
Kauffman said Reese Swanson has also made a lasting impression through her growth and commitment to the program.
“Reese Swanson has left the biggest impression on me. She has improved so much since her freshman year and she has shown some much dedication to her team,” Kauffman said.
The senior said athletics has supplied lessons that reach beyond volleyball. The sport has helped her learn how to respond to both the highs and lows that come with competition.
“Being an athlete has taught me how to handle disappointment and victories, and how to be disciplined and determined,” Kauffman said.
Away from the court, Kauffman enjoys playing piano, singing, reading and spending time with family and friends. Her favorite school subject is American history, and she credits Mrs. Oswalt — her teacher in third, fifth and sixth grades — as her favorite teacher.
Kauffman also serves as student council president, a life group leader and a member of her school’s worship team. In her hometown, she enjoys spending time with friends at Freddy’s.
